Drawdown, exposure and margin are the three technical indicators that describe the actual state of your account at any given time. Reading them judiciously helps you distinguish a physiological fluctuation from a situation that requires further investigation.
These are not numbers to be watched constantly: they are tools for periodic verification, useful when you want to understand the overall picture without being influenced by short-period noise.
These indicators must be read together, not one at a time. A value taken on its own tells very little: it is the relationship between the three that gives meaning.
Drawdown: what it measures
The drawdown represents the distance, in a time interval, between the maximum peak reached by capital and the current point. A drawdown is not a problem in itself: it is a normal characteristic of any operational activity.
- Temporary drawdown: part of the operational cycle
- Prolonged drawdown: deserves analysis with support
- Drawdown stabilized by hedging: expected behavior
Exposure: how much you are currently involved
Exposure describes how much of your capital is currently involved in open positions. High exposure does not mean high risk in an absolute sense: it means that a portion of the capital is at work, often with hedging that stabilizes its progress.
Margin: the technical threshold of the broker
The margin is the parameter that the broker uses to keep positions open. It should be monitored to ensure there is always adequate technical space. A reduced margin is never a good starting point for making sudden decisions.
Interpreting a single indicator without the others leads to wrong decisions. If something does not add up, before intervening, open a ticket and share the screenshot with support.
How to use the three indicators together
Incorrect reading consists of evaluating drawdown, exposure and margin as a single photograph. A fluctuation in drawdown accompanied by stable exposure and ample margin tells a very different story from a reading in which the three values tighten simultaneously.
Over time you will learn to recognize the normal patterns of the service and distinguish them from cases that deserve technical investigation. This is where knowledge of the dashboard becomes a real advantage.
